■帰省
子供のころ、よく両親と一緒に母の故郷であるマレーシアへ「帰省」したにもかかわらず、私にとって「帰省」は、中国やインド、日本のような面積が大きい国でしか行われないことでした。
マレーシアにある母の実家に、橋一本を渡れば、すぐ到着できると何年も勘違いしていました。実際は、橋を渡るとすぐに、私は爆睡してしまい、父が高速道路で6時間も運転していたことに全然気づきませんでした。マレーシアに住んだ記憶が浅い私にとって、国境を越えれば、旅行だと思いました。しかし、母は年に一回ぐらいしか家族とは会えず、その気持ちはきっと、遊び心で行った私の気持ちと全然違うでしょう。
ゴールデンウイークを機に帰省する方も旅行する方も多くいるでしょう。少々早いと思いますが、無理をせず、気をつけていってらっしゃい。南房総に帰省してきた方には、お帰りなさい。何にしても、よいゴールデンウイークをお過ごしください!

■Going home
Although my family often went back to my mother’s hometown in Malaysia, the practice of“ returning to one’s hometown” was a concept that, to me, only occurred in large countries such as China, India, and Japan.
For many years, I mistakenly thought that my mother’s hometown in Malaysia was just a short journey away after crossing the causeway. In fact, I always fell dead to the world once we crossed the causeway, and never noticed that my father drove six long hours on the expressway to get us there. For me, who only had vague memories of my life in Malaysia, crossing the borders meant a holiday. To my mother, who could only see her family once a year, returning home must have been very different.
This Golden Week, I’m sure that many will take the chance to return home or go on a holiday. While it is a little early, please be careful and I wish you bon voyage . For those who are returning home to Minamiboso, welcome home. Regardless of what you will be doing, have a great Golden Week!
