町内の学校で英語を教えているALTの先生方が、それぞれの出身地にちなんだ行事や食べ物について教えてくれるコラムです。第1回は中学校勤務のマイケル先生が故郷アメリカのニューイヤーについて教えてくれました!

Americans love to party. Especially on New Years Eve. And so usually it’s customary for American people to gather in mass at various places to ring in the new year. At people’s homes, friends and family members get together. At office buildings, coworkers and colleagues congregate. Traditional attire worn includes snazzy party wear, with celebration masks and hats.

Champagne is the drink of choice for most attendees. People toast to the completion of one year, and to new beginnings and successes in the new year to come. The energy is electrifying.

An age old American tradition for marking this occasion is of course the huge celebration in New York City’s world famous Times Square. Thousands of people attend this event. And it’s also broadcast on television, so there are lots of famous celebrities there as well. Live musical performances by well-known music idols, for example.

At the center of it all is the iconic New Years Eve ball looming high above the celebration. This magnificent sphere has been changing its appearance over the decades since its debut. It is lit up with many dazzling and colorful lights, and people like to watch it drop at the stroke of midnight, with a very audible countdown, chanted by everyone in attendance. Then the new years begins as confetti flies through the air.

アメリカ人はパーティー(集まり)が好きな気質ですが、大晦日の夜は特別です。様々な場所で大勢が集まり、思い思いの新年を迎えます。華やかなパーティーウェアや伝統的な服装(お祝いの仮面や帽子)を着飾り、家では家族や友達が、オフィスビルには同僚や仲間が集まります。
多くの参加者はシャンパンを飲み物として選びます。なぜなら、人々は一年の終わりと新しい年の始まり、そして成功を祝して乾杯するからです。気持ちは最高潮です。
ニューヨーク市では世界的に有名なタイムズスクエアにて大規模な祝賀(ボールドロップ)を催すことが伝統になっています。なんと、100万人以上の人々がこのイベントに参加します。その様子はテレビで放送され、多くの有名人も参加しており、有名な音楽アーティストによるライブパフォーマンス等が行われます。
上空に舞う新年の祝賀ボールはこのイベントのシンボルとなっています。この壮大な祝賀ボールは、イベントが始まって以来何十年もの間、その外観を変化させ、眩くカラフルな光を照らし出してきました。新年の始まりの瞬間には、参加者全員によるカウントダウンが大声で行われ、人々の視線がボールドロップに注がれます。紙吹雪が空中に舞い、新年が始まるのです。
