町内の学校で英語を教えているALTの先生方が、それぞれの出身地にちなんだ行事や食べ物について教えてくれるコラムです。第2回はこども園勤務のベンジャミン先生が、冬の食べ物について教えてくれました!

Traditional foods are seasonal depending on what is available. American food draws from a wide variety of ethnic foods and native crops. Many typical foods differ from Japanese foods by cooking time. Japanese foods are cut small and cooked fast. Many American foods are cooked for hours, especially in winter when the extra heat in the house is welcome.

Stews are very popular and come in many flavors. This photo is “thick lentil stew”. Lentils are like small beans. Root vegetables like carrots and onions are added for flavor and texture. Putting in a little bit of fat and spice make this very tasty and filling.

Chili is a very popular dish in USA. Every state has it’s own favorite style. Chili usually has tomatoes, beans, onions, bell peppers and hot spices. Most chili has beef or other meat but this photo is“ vegetarian chili” with corn added.

Besides stews, roast meats are very popular. The cut of meat should be thick. Roast meats are kept moist by adding a bit of liquid like water, broth or wine to the pan. Sometimes vegetables are cooked with the meat. This pork belly is wrapped around onions and lemon grass.

伝統的な料理は季節の旬な食材を使います。アメリカ料理は民族的な食べ物とアメリカ原産の穀物から生まれました。アメリカの典型的な料理の多くは調理時間において日本の料理と異なっています。日本の料理は小さくカットされ、素早く調理されますが、多くのアメリカ料理は何時間も調理されます。寒くなる冬には特にその傾向があります。

シチューはとても人気でいろいろな種類の風味があります。この写真はレンズ豆のシチューです。レンズ豆は小さな大豆のようなもので、人参やたまねぎといった根菜と一緒に調理すると風味と食感がよくなります。少量の脂とスパイスを入れることでさらに美味しく、食べたときに満腹感が出ます。

チリはアメリカでとても人気のある料理です。それぞれの州に独自のスタイルがあります。チリにはたいていトマト、大豆、玉ねぎ、ピーマンと香辛料が使われます。牛肉や他の肉が調理されることもあります。この写真はトウモロコシ入りの野菜チリです。

シチューのほかには、ローストミートもとても人気です。一切れは分厚くカットされています。ローストミートは少量の水や出汁、ワインを入れることでよりしっとりとした仕上がりになります。野菜と肉が同時に調理されることもあります。この豚バラのローストミートは玉ねぎとレモングラスを包んだものです。
