[April Fool’s Day：]
Every year on April 1st many people from around the world celebrate “April Fool’ s Day.”
There are many theories as to how this holiday began, but no one knows the exact origin.

Historians believe that holiday dates back to medieval Europe(500-1500AD), and the most popular theory is that it originated in France.
In 1564, King Charles IX of France decide that January 1st would be New Year’ s Day throughout the country. However, it took some time for the news to spread throughout the entire kingdom, so many people originally celebrated New Year’ s Day on April 1st. Therefore,people who knew that New Year’ s Day had changed to January 1st made fun of people who were still celebrating New Year’ s Day on April 1st by giving them fish, which is considered to be the beginning of “April Fool’ s Day” in France.

Currently, “April Fool’ s Day” is a day to play harmless pranks on friends and family. Some common pranks are to replace the cream in Oreos with toothpaste, or put sugar in a salt shaker and wait for someone to use it. There are many ways to pull a prank! One of my favorite Japanese pranks is to put a chalkboard eraser in the door and wait for someone to open it.

Some people have mixed feelings about “April Fool’ s Day,” because people like to trick others,but very few people like to be tricked. I think if you decide to celebrate this holiday, you should also consider how you would feel should you be on the receiving end of the joke.

毎年4月1日には、世界中の多くの人々がエイプリルフールをお祝いします。「エイプリルフール」がどのようにして生まれたのかについては諸説ありますが、その起源について正確には誰も知りません。

エイプリルフールは「フランスが発祥の地である」という説が最も有力で、歴史学者の中には、その起源が中世ヨーロッパ(西暦500～1500年)であると考える人もいます。
この時代、フランスでは、1年の始まりがすべての地域で同じではなく、ある人たちにとっては3月、またある人たちにとっては4月のはじめの日、とバラバラでした。
1564年、フランス国王のシャルル9世が、フランス全域で1月1日を元旦とすると決定しました。
しかし、このニュースがフランス全域で浸透するまでに時間がかかったので、多くの人は元々の4月1日に元旦をお祝いしました。そこで、元旦の日が変わったことを知った人が、4月1日にお祝いしている人々をからかうために魚を贈ったのが、フランスでのエイプリルフールの始まりとされています。

色々な諸説があるエイプリルフールですが、私たち皆が知っていることは、エイプリルフールは友人や家族に無害ないたずらをする日ということです。よくあるいたずらとしては、オレオに入っているクリームを歯磨き粉に変えたり、塩入れに砂糖を入れて誰かが使うのを待つといったものがあります。いたずらはたくさんありますが、私のお気に入りの日本のいたずらは、扉に黒板消しを挟み、誰かが開けるのを待つことです。
エイプリルフールについて、複雑な感情を持つ人もいます。なぜなら、人は他人を騙すのは好きですが、騙されることを好む人はほとんどいないからです。私は、エイプリルフールを祝うと決めたなら、騙される側になるかもしれないということも考えておく必要があると思います。
