今月は、アメリカの不幸な歴史と、変わりつつあるアメリカの祝日について話したいと思います。「コロンブスデー」はクリストファー・コロンブスを祝う祝日です。コロンブスは1492年にヨーロッパ諸国のために南北アメリカを発見したとされるイタリアの探検家です。
彼は発見者としてアメリカではよく知られていますが、1970年代から80年代にかけて、コロンブスを祝うのをやめようという運動が起きました。これは、クリストファー・コロンブスとその探検家たちが、出会ったアメリカ先住民に対してひどいことをしたからです。それだけではなく、彼らの後にも多くのヨーロッパ人が来て同じことをしました。そのヨーロッパ人はさらにひどいことを行い、ネイティブアメリカンの家を盗みました。
現在、多くの州がコロンブスデーを中止し、代わりに「ネイティブアメリカンデー」を制定しました。最初の州は1988年にハワイでしたが、2015年になるまで他の多くの州がハワイに加わりませんでした。現在、20の州が新しい祝日を使用し始めています。
歴史が変わっていくような気がしてとても興味深いです。しかし、クリストファー・コロンブスは変わりませんでした。アメリカ人は彼が二面性を持っていることを常に知っていました。彼は探検家でもあり、征服者でもありました。その代わりに、休日は私たちの価値観を反映していると思います。以前は、先住民よりも発見の方が重要でしたが、今では先住民の方が私たちにとって重要になりつつあります。それは良い方向だと思います。

Hello everyone!
This month, I want to talk about some unfortunate American history, and a US holiday that is in the process of changing. ”Columbus Day” is a holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus. He was the Italian explorer who was credited with discovering North and South America for European countries in 1492.
He is well known in America for his discovery, but since the 1970’s and 80’s, there has been a movement to stop celebrating him. This is because Christopher Columbus and his explorers did terrible things to the Native Americans that they met. And not only that, they were the first in a very long line of people who came from Europe. Together, those future Americans did more terrible things, and stole the Native American’s homes.
Now, many states have stopped Columbus day, and they replaced it with ”Native American Day”. The first state was Hawaii in 1988, but not many other states joined Hawaii until 2015. Now, 20 states have started using the new holiday.
It’s interesting to me, because it feels like history is changing. But Christopher Columbus didn’t change. Americans always knew that he had two sides. He was part explorer, and part conqueror. So instead, I think the holidays are a reflection
of our values. Before, the discovery was more important than the people he met, but now, the native people are becoming more important to us. I think that’s a good direction.
