皆様こんにちは!

今月は英語の面白いフレーズについてお話したいと思います。「そんなことありえない!」と言いたいときは、「豚が空を飛ぶとき○○が起こる!」と言うことができます。豚は空を飛べないから○○は起こらないという考えです。似たような言葉に「○○の時は地獄では寒い日になるだろう」というものがあります。これも同様の考えです。地獄は永遠に燃え続ける場所であるはずなので、決して寒くなることはなく、○○は決して起こらないのです。
私にとって最も興味深いのは、ほとんどの言語に同様のフレーズがあるということです。各国が最も不可能だと考えていることを見てみましょう。

中国語、韓国語、ヒンディー語(北インド)では、「太陽が西から昇るとき」とよく言います。太陽が東から昇ることはわかっているので、これは実際には非常に不可能に思えます。

デンマーク語では「1週間に木曜日が2回あるとき」と言います。これは物理的に不可能ではありませんが、論理的には不可能です。

フランス語では「オンドリが卵を産むとき」と言います。オンドリは男の子なので、非常に珍しい生態がなければ卵を産むことができません。

日本語には「馬の耳に念仏」「網の目に風とまらず」「畑に蛤」というフレーズがあります。それらはすべて不可能なことについて説明しています。これは日本語では少し厳格に聞こえますが、英語では非常にフレンドリーに聞こるのは私だけでしょうか…

私の個人的なお気に入りのフレーズはイタリア語で、「もしおばあちゃんにタイヤがあったら、彼女は自転車になるだろう」と言うことです。それは、「不可能なことの影響について考えることに時間を費やすべきではない」ということです。私の祖母はタイヤを持っていないので、タイヤを持っている場合に彼女を何と呼ぶかを考えるのは無意味です。

何か不可能なことを言うときに使うフレーズはありますか?これらがあなたのスピーチをよりカラフルなものにするきっかけとなることを願っています。

This month, I’d like to talk about an interesting phrase in English. When you want to say something will never happen, you can say, “Yeah, when pigs fly!” The idea is that pigs will never fly, so ○○ will never happen. There is a similar phrase, “It will be a cold day in Hell when ○○.” This is a similar idea, because Hell is supposed to be a place that is on fire forever, and so it can never get cold, and ○○ will never happen.
The most interesting thing to me, is that most languages have a similar phrase! Lets see what each country thinks is the most impossible：

In Chinese, Korean and Hindi (Northern India), they commonly say “When the sun rises in the west.” We know that the sun rises in the East, so this seems very impossible indeed!

In Danish, they say, “When there are two Thursdays in one week.” This one isn’t physically impossible, but logically impossible!

In French, they can say, “When roosters lay eggs.” Roosters are boys, so they can’t lay eggs without some very unusual biology!

In Japanese, there are these phrases： 馬の耳に念仏,網の目に風とまらず, and 畑に蛤. They all describe an impossible task. However, this sounds a little more strict in Japanese, it sounds very friendly in English.

My personal favorite phrase is in Italian, where you can say, “If my grandma had wheels, she’d be a wheelbarrow.” It means that, “we shouldn’t spend time thinking about the implications of impossible things.” My grandma can’t have wheels, so it’s pointless to think about what to call her if she did!
