ペットを飼っていますか?12月になると新しいペットを迎えるご家庭も多いと思いますが、世の中でペットを飼っている人はどのくらいいるのだろうかと考えました。日本にはペットがどのぐらいいるかな?これが私が見つけたものです。

米国はこれまでで最も多くのペットを飼っています。一番目のアメリカには7,000万匹の犬が飼われ、7,400万匹の猫が飼われています。アメリカの世帯の68%が何らかのペットを飼っています。二番目に、中国もこれに迫っており、犬は7,400万頭、猫は6,700万頭います。

両国とも猫と犬の人口では僅差ですが、三番目にブラジルは断然犬のほうが好きです。彼らは5,400万匹の犬を飼っていますが、猫はわずか2,400万匹です。反対に、ドイツ、フランス、ロシアはいずれも猫を好みます。

しかし、日本はどうでしょうか?ペットの数では全体で9位にランクされており、猫の数が960万匹であるのに対し、犬の数は850万匹で、猫の方が若干好まれています。多くの人が持つスペースは限られているため、猫の人気が高まるのも当然です。日本の犬も10kg以下の小型犬がほとんどです。

世界的には犬の方が若干人気があります。犬はおよそ3軒に1軒の家に住んでいます。猫もそれに負けず劣らず、ほぼ4軒に1軒の家に猫が住んでいます。ペットは、仲間との交流を通じて飼い主の精神的健康を助け、またペットは外で遊ぶのが好きなため、飼い主の身体的健康にも役立つことが多いと言われています。

Do you have any pets? I think many families get a new pet in December, so I was thinking, how many people have pets in the world? How many pets are in Japan? Here’s what I found.

The United States has the most pets by far. There are 70 million pet dogs in America, and 74 million pet cats! 68% of American households own a pet of some kind. 2nd is China, close behind, with 74 million dogs, and 67 million cats.

Both countries are close in the population of cats vs dogs, but Brazil, the 3rd country, definitely prefers dogs! They have 54 million dogs, and only 24 million cats. On the opposite side, Germany, France, and Russia, all prefer cats.

But what about Japan? Well, it ranks 9th overall in pet population, and slightly prefers cats, with 9.6 million cats vs 8.5 million dogs. With the limited space many people have, it makes sense that cats are more popular! Most dogs in Japan are also small, under 10 kg.

Worldwide, dogs are slightly more popular； they live in about one in three homes. Cats aren’t far behind though, they live in almost 1 in 4 homes! It is often said that pets help their owners’ mental health through companionship, and they often help their owners’ physical health because pets like to go outside to play!
