今日は現代における大切なコミュニケーション手段である「絵文字」についてお話したいと思います!多くのアメリカ人がこの「絵文字」を使いますが、それは英語の「Emotion」(感情)という言葉に似ているからです。しかし、もちろん「絵文字」は日本語です。絵文字が日本で発明されたことをご存知ですか?これらは1999年にドコモの「iモード」用に初めて作成されました。これが、特定の日本の絵文字がたくさんある理由です。

「***」のような日本のジェスチャー、「*****」のような日本の物語、「*****」のような祭り、「***」のような日本のアイコンは、日本以外ではあまり意味がありませんが、これらの絵文字は世界中の誰もが利用できます。国際辞書(Unicode)には、毎年約50～70の新しい絵文字が追加されます。しかし、日本ほど多くの特定の記号を持っている国はありません。絵文字は日本のために作られたものだからです。

他の国でも異なる意味を持つ絵文字がたくさんあります。たとえば、私が父に「*」というメッセージを送ったら、私が父に怒っていると思われたとします。彼は「怒った雄牛」に似ていると言っていましたが、私は「勝利」に似ていると思いました。もう1つの混乱点は「*」です。日本では「ありがとう」のようなものですが、アメリカでは「祈り」です。

絵文字は世界中でますます使用されていますが、多くの人はそれが目に見えない日本の文化であることを知りません。ぜひ日本の絵文字を使って楽しんでください!***

Today, I want to talk about an important way to communicate in the modern era, the ‘Emoji!’ Many Americans use this word, ‘Emoji’, because it sounds like the English word ‘Emotion’. But of course, ‘Emoji’ is a Japanese word. Did you know that emoji were invented in Japan? They were first created for Docomo’s ‘i-Mode’ in 1999. This is why there are many specific Japanese emoji.

Japanese gestures like ‘***’, Japanese stories like ‘*****’, festivals like ‘*****’, and Japanese icons like ‘***’ don’t have much meaning outside of Japan, but these emoji are available for everyone in the world! About 50-70 new emoji are added to the international dictionary (Unicode) every year. But no country has as many specific symbols as Japan, because emoji were created for Japan!

There are many emoji that have different meanings in other countries too. For example, I sent my dad a message with ‘*’, and he thought I was angry with him. He said it looks like an ‘angry bull’, but I thought it looked like ‘triumph’. Another point of confusion is ‘*’. In Japan, it’s like a ‘thank you’, but in America, it’s a ‘prayer’.

Emoji are used more and more, and all around the world, but many people don’t know it’s Japanese culture hiding in plain sight! Please enjoy using these Japanese Emoji! ***
