世界中の多くの言語で、曜日が同じ場所から来ていることをご存知ですか?これらは肉眼で見える惑星に基づいています。このシステムは最初にシュメール人に始まり、バビロニア人、そしてローマ帝国に受け継がれました。

ローマ人がヨーロッパに広がると、ゲルマン人はローマ人のシステムを採用しましたが、北欧の神々に合わせて神々の名前を変更しました。したがって、空と嵐の神であるジュピターは、雷の神であるトールになりました。「木星の日」は「トールの日」になり、最終的には「トールディー」になりました(映画「アベンジャーズ」を見たことがあれば、おそらくトールについて知っているでしょう)。

日本にも同じ制度が入ってきました。7日間惑星系は4世紀にローマから中国に広がり、中国では元素(木、火、土、金、水)に関連した独自の名前が惑星に使用されました。弘法大師という名の仏教僧は、中国の制度を日本に持ち帰ったと信じられています。

日本の曜日の一部が英語の曜日と一致するのはこのためです。同じ場所から来たのです!世界中の方言やことわざにある歴史を発見するのが大好きですが、世界中の語源を見つけるのはさらに大好きなことです!

Did you know that in many languages around the world, the days of the week come from the same place? They are based on the planets visible to the naked eye. The system first started with the Sumerians, passed on to the Babylonians, and then to the Roman Empire.

When the Romans spread in Europe, the Germanic people took the Roman’ s system, but they changed the names of the gods to match their Norse gods. So Jupiter, the god of sky and storms, became Thor, the god of thunder. “Day of Jupiter” became “Thor’ s Day”, which eventually became “Thursday” (If you’ ve seen the Avengers movie, you probably know about Thor.)

The same system also came to Japan. The 7-day planetary system spread from Rome to China in the 4th century, and in China they used their own names for the planets, related to the elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Gold, Water). A buddhist monk named Kobo Daishi is credited with bringing the Chinese system back to Japan.

This is why some of the Japanese days of the week match the English ones, they came from the same place! I love discovering the history behind everyday words, and finding a shared history is even better!
