Since coming to Japan, I have certainly experienced many culture-shocks which I will mention little by little on my next articles. But today I would like to tell you why I haven’t really felt home sick since coming here. Living in the Tohoku region in Japan, and specially in Showa, we have all 4 seasons and get to be surrounded by beautiful mountains. I did live in the city living in Quebec. Back there, I didn’t exactly live as close to the mountains as in Showa, where I open my window and have a mountain directly in front of me. However, mountains start 10 min after I start driving and the whole province is composed of thousands of lakes and thousands of square kilometers of forest. The greenery scene of this forests is very similar to that of Aizu in general. Also, during winter it is cold and there is a lot of snow. Even though the winter is slightly mild compared to that of Quebec I don’t think I would have felt the same if I were in a region with no snow. I am extremely thankful for that. And it is also a plus that it is not as cold as in Quebec, the sensation of maybe losing one’s toe is not that funny. Joke, it doesn’t happen that often. Although, there is a northern region in Canada where it’s become an alcohol： “The Sourtoe cocktail” because it’s so cold people lose their toes. I am grateful that is not a problem here.

日本に来てから、私は本当に沢山のカルチャーショック受けましたが、次回以降の記事で少しづつ紹介したいと思います。
でも今日は、なぜ昭和村に来てからホームシックになったことがないのか、その理由をお話ししたいと思います。
東北地方、特に昭和村に住んでいると美しい山々に囲まれ、四季を感じることができます。
私はケベックでは都市に住んでいました。
あの頃は、窓を開けると目の前に山々が見える昭和村のような山に近い場所に住んではいませんでしたが、車で走ると10分後には山が見えてきて州全体は何千もの湖と何千平方キロメートルもの森林で覆われていました。
この森林の緑豊かな風景は、会津の風景とよく似て、冬は寒くて雪も多いです。
昭和村はケベックに比べれば冬は少し暖かいですが、もし雪が降らない地域に住んでいたら同じようには感じなかったと思います。
その点はとても良かったと思っています。
そして、ケベックほど寒くないのも良いところです。足の指がなくなるかもしれないという感覚は笑い事ではありません。
これは冗談で、そうそうあることではありませんが、カナダの北部では、あまりの寒さに足の指がなくなってしまうことから、「サワートゥ・カクテル※」と呼ばれ、お酒になっている地域があります。
昭和村ではそういった心配がないのでありがたいです。

※アルコール度数の高いお酒の中に、ミイラ化した人間の足の指を入れたカクテル。
指は飲み込まないが、少なくとも一度は唇でつま先に触れなければならないというルールがある。
最初のつま先は、カナダ・ユーコンで凍傷により失った男のもので、彼の兄が冗談で密造酒の瓶に入れたのがこのカクテル始まりとされている
