■Quebec City Winter Carnival(ケベック・ウィンター・カーニバル)

Dear Showa Village residents, the month of February may be cold but many winter events happen during that month around the world. There is the annual Quebec City Winter Carnival which celebrates the best things about the Canadian winter. Nearly 400,000 visitors attend each year, enjoying a variety of events. There are activities for all ages, such as night parades, snow sculpture contests, and ice skating.
This festival is so important for Quebec residents as it is a population often faced with harsh winters and so they decided to put on a snow festival to warm their hearts. Bonhomme is the event’s representative, you can see him on the picture down below. He is a very nice and charismatic snowman. He likes to dance and have fun with everyone and he uses a long red or blue trumpet to liven up the mood along the Carnival Night Parade route!
Within the carnival’s traditionswe have wearing red clothing, carnival songs, the arrow sash (which is a type of traditionally waeved scarf), Bonhomme’s Effigy (the plastic pass to the Carnival depicting Bonhomme’s image) and the famous “The caribou” which is a delicious hot, spiced drink similar to mulled wine.
Those are some of our all time-honoured traditions dating back to the origins of the Carnival. This is celebrated from the end of January until mid February. The Carnival made its debut in 1894 and keeps going strongly!

カーニバルの伝統には、赤い衣服の着用、カーニバルの歌、アロー・サッシュ(伝統的な羽織るスカーフの一種)、ボノームのエフィジー(ボノームの姿が描かれたカーニバルのプラスチック通行証)、そしてモルド・ワイン※に似た、スパイスの効いた熱い飲み物「カリブー」などがあります。
これらは、カーニバルの起源にまでさかのぼる、昔からの伝統行事です。
カーニバルの開催時期は、1月末から2月中旬で、1894年に始まり現在も根強く続いています!
