Did you know that parts of English words always have the same meaning? For example, if a word starts with “dis”, it means the opposite of that same word without “dis”. Like means 好き, and dislike means 嫌い. Agree means 賛成, and disagree means 反対.
英単語の一部が常に同じ意味を持っていることを知っていますか?例えば、「dis」で始まる単語は、「dis」のない単語の時と意味が逆になります。Likeの意味は「好き」ですが、dislikeになると「嫌い」の意味になります。Agreeは「賛成」、disagreeになると「反対」という意味になるのです。

Do you know the months in English? Today I want to talk about September, October, November, and December. That is 9月、10月、11月、12月　in Japanese. Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec, mean 7, 8, 9, and 10, respectively. However, September is the 9th month, October the 10th, November the 11th, and December the 12th.This is odd. 英語で12ヶ月をそれぞれ何というか知っていますか?September、October、November、とDecemberについてお話しします。日本語で、9月、10月、11月、12月のことですが、実はSeptは7で、Octは8、Novは9、Decは10を意味します。でも、12ヶ月のうちSeptemberは9番目、Octoberは10番目、Novemberは11番目、Decemberは12番目です。ちょっと不思議ですね。意味と数が合いません。

These words were originally Latin, but English months words are based on the Latin ones. In Ancient Rome, there were only 10 months. Later, two more months were added, but the names of the other months were not changed. That is why they are all 2 less than the month they represent.
この英単語はもともとラテン語で、英語の月の単語は全部ラテン語に基づいています。古代ローマの暦法は10ヶ月だけでした。後に2つの月が追加されましたが、他の月の名前は変更されませんでした。そのため、単語の意味が表す月より2少ないのです。

English can be tricky, especially when the word’s themselves are contradictions.
単語の名前と意味が反する場合もあって、英語は難しいですね。
