■New Year Celebrations in the Philippines： A Vibrant Tradition
フィリピンの新年のお祝い：活気に満ちた伝統

In the Philippines, the celebration of the New Y ear is an explosive affair.
A few days before Christmas, street stalls begin to set up, offering fireworks for families to purchase and set off in front of their homes when the clock strikes midnight. Just like in Japan, where people celebrate the New Year with Osechi, Filipinos have their own traditional New Y ear meal called “Media Noche.”
Twelve round fruits are displayed on the dinner table, symbolizing prosperity for the year ahead. In my family, we take twelve oranges and roll them through the front door on New Year’s, a tradition meant to invite wealth and prosperity into our home. Weal so turn on every single light in the house so that our home will be lively and happy throughout the year.
These traditions make New Year’s in the Philippines not just a celebration but a time to embrace hope for the future.

フィリピンでは、新年のお祝いが盛大に行われます。
クリスマスの数日前になると、露店が立ち始め、いろんな家族が花火を購入し、(新年を迎える)真夜中になると家の前で打ち上げます。日本ではおせち料理で新年を祝うのと同じように、フィリピンにも「メディアノーチェ」と呼ばれる独自の伝統的な正月料理があります。
食卓には今年の繁栄を象徴する12個の丸い果物が飾られます。私の家庭では、新年にオレンジを12個、玄関に置きます。これは、富と繁栄を家に招くことを意味する伝統です。また、一年を通して家が明るく幸せになるように、家のすべての照明を点灯します。
このようなフィリピンの伝統的な新年の迎え方は、単なるお祝いではなく、未来への希望を抱くという意味を持った時間と言えます。
