Aloha Nakatombetsu!
Many people have questioned me about how to spell Nakatombetsu correctly in English. When is it an “n?” When do you use “m?” It’ s a puzzling and frustrating thought that comes up often, am I right? Let me explain to you the correct way to spell Nakatombetsu in English.
When referring to Nakatombetsu as Nakatombetsu, the ん-sound before -betsu is changed to an “m.” When pronouncing NA-KA-TO- “M” -BE-TSU, you say the ん as the beginning sound of m-A, m-I, m-U, m-E, m-O. You wouldn’ t pronounce the ん as the beginning sound of n-A, n-I, n-U, n-E, n-O, right? For Japanese, there is an English pronunciation rule that the ん-sound before the letter b, p, and m is pronounced as “m.”
Nakato “m” betsu.
Other examples include Hamatombetsu, Mombetsu, Nihombashi, Namba, and Hommachi.
When referring to Nakatombetsu as Nakaton, the correct way to spell Nakaton is with an “n.” That is because there in no letters or sounds following the ん -sound.
