Hello residents of Showa Mura,
When I arrived in Japan I was surprised to learn about graduation ceremonies. In New Zealand we only have two graduation ceremonies, for when you complete high school and university. We also do not have entrance exams for any school. During high school we have very important exams at the end of the year that gain us points.
Over the three years we gain enough points to gain university entrance. Then once we have graduated, we apply to universities by submitting our request to join. The universities look through the applicants and inform us if we have been accepted or not. Usually, you apply to many universities to be safe. I was a little mischievous and only applied to one. I’m lucky they accepted my application.
Once you have completed your university degree, we have our final graduation ceremony, these are a lot more formal that high school graduations. We often wear a cloak, with the inside of the hood being lined with colored fabric. The color of the fabric depends on the subject that you studied. From my memory if you studied art (like I did) it was pink inside.
Congratulations to the graduating students! Thank you for studying hard and doing your best. I look forward to teaching the new first graders in junior and elementary high school and I wish the 3rd graders the best in their new high school lives!
Until next time.
~Annick
