文化 HELLO! Connor ～コナーです!～

Hello everyone, this is Connor.Lots has happened since my last article. Winter has fi nally begun, and the cold is getting stronger. Hokkaido is beautiful covered in snow.
Before fall ended I hiked Asahidake. Jessica and I, along with some friends, visited at the end of September. We dipped our feet in Nakadake Onsen and forgot all of our problems for a moment.
Where I lived in Montana was very similar to the Kamikawa region.
Up on the Rocky Mountains lay small hot springs. These are heated by a large volcano deep beneath the surface. I think it’s funny howwater heated by a deadly volcano can bring us such joy.
December is probably one of the most important months for families in America. My family is not traditional in how we celebrate Christmas. We often don’t plan much for holidays, but we all take these few days when everyone is free to catch up before the next year. This year’s holiday season will be small back home. My brother and his family are now living in Europe, my step sister is finishing up college, and I am in Aibetsu. While it may not be home, I hope the town of Aibetsu keeps me warm like the hot springs our homes share.

皆さんこんにちは、コナーです。前回の記事(広報10月号)からいろいろなことがありました。いよいよ冬も始まり、寒さが増してきました。雪に覆われた北海道は本当に美しいです。秋も終盤になった9月にジェシカと友人たちと一緒に、旭岳に登りました。中岳温泉で足を浸し、しばしの間、すべての悩みを忘れることができました。
私が住んでいたモンタナ州は、上川地域ととても似ています。ロッキー山脈の高地には、小さな温泉が混在していて、それらは地中深くにある火山によって温められています。命を脅かす火山の熱で温められた水が、私たちに喜びをもたらすなんて、なんだか不思議で面白いですね。
12月は、アメリカでは家族にとって最も大切な月の一つです。私の家族は、クリスマスの過ごし方が少し変わっていて、特別な計画を立てることはありません。みんなが自由になるこの数日間を使って、翌年に向けて近況を語り合うのが恒例です。今年の12月は、実家ではこぢんまりとしたものになりそうです。兄とその家族は今ヨーロッパに住んでいて、義理の妹は大学を卒業間近、そして私は愛別町にいます。愛別町は故郷ではないけれど、私たちの故郷にある温泉のように、心も体も温めてくれる場所であってほしいと願っています。
