■社会の窓
私は、旅行するとき、必ず地元のスーパーに行くこととしています。なぜならば、世界中のスーパーは同様の役割を担っていますが、それらの社会や文化、食習慣などについてザっと理解できる場所だからです。私は滞在したことのある国の中で、豪州のスーパーが一番印象に残っています。
豪州のスーパーに行ったら、豪州人は環境を大切にしているとすぐ分かります。商品の包装を最低限にしていて、シングルユースプラスチックのレジ袋も全く使いません。また、フードロスを防ぐために、形が変わった野菜でも味がおいしいと消費者にマーケティングするほか、いろいろな対策を練っています。環境保全のほか、人々の生活を重視していると分かります。消費者が類似の商品を簡易に比べられるよう、棚札に100グラムか1キログラムあたりの値段が表示されています。毎週の特売で、あらゆる商品が半額になり、基本食品に税金がかかりません。また、女性として大変助かるのは、社会で生きていけるための生理用品も課税されていないことです。
豪州のスーパーでいつ見ても笑ってしまうのは、壁一面に、乳製品がずらっと並び、通路に沿って様々なパンが並んでいるところです。実に食習慣が異なると実感します。
日本のスーパーは、日本のどの面を表しているのでしょうか?

■A window into society
Whenever I travel, the local supermarket is one of my“ must go” places. That is because, despite their similar purpose all over the world, you can get a peek into a country’s society, culture, and diet there. Among the countries that I have lived in, Australia’s supermarkets have left an impression on me.
As soon as you step into an Australian supermarket, you will notice that Australians care deeply for the environment. Packaging is minimized and single use plastic grocery bags are not used at all. Supermarkets market oddly shaped produce to consumers in addition to various other measures to prevent food loss. Other than the environment, the people’s livelihood is also a priority； price tags show the price per gram or kilogram so that consumers can easily compare between options, various products go at half price in the weekly sales, and basic food items are tax free. The most helpful initiative for women is that essential feminine products that enable them to function in society are tax free.
One thing in an Australian supermarket that always makes me laugh is the shelves upon shelves of dairy product that take up an entire wall and the entire aisle of assorted bread. Clearly, they have a very different diet. What aspect of Japan do you feel Japan’s supermarkets illuminate?
