町内の学校で英語を教えているALTの先生方が、それぞれの出身地にちなんだ行事や食べ物について教えてくれるコラムです。第3回は小学校勤務のルイーズ先生が、イースターについて教えてくれました!

Easter in the Philippines is festive and fun! The Philippines is known for many different cultural practices and traditions. As a religious country, we Filipinos greatly value celebrations such as that of Easter since it symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus. Since it is a time for rejoicing, many Filipino families come together to celebrate in different ways.

When I was in the Philippines, we would always celebrate Easter by playing Easter egg hunt. Colorful plastic eggs are carefully hidden in one’s own yard, and children try to find as many eggs as they can. I enjoyed this game a lot because it was fun going around the yard looking for eggs as if they were treasures. At the end of the game, we counted all the eggs, and the winner was given a cash prize.

The Easter egg hunt was followed by a fun and creative activity, which allowed us to decorate and paint on a real chicken egg. After painting and drying it up, we voted for whoever had the best artwork.

After the egg painting, we gathered around the dining table and waited for the food to be blessed, and we enjoyed all sorts of festive food. Lots of food are usually served because the week before Easter was a week of fasting and abstaining, which means we had to limit food intake and we had to give up our favorite foods, including many kinds of meat except fish. So during Easter, we would end our fasting, and we would celebrate with our family over a wide variety of delicious food.

フィリピンのイースターは楽しいお祭りです!フィリピンは多様な文化的慣習や伝統があることで知られています。宗教国家であるフィリピン人はキリストの復活を象徴するイースターをとても重要な祝祭として位置づけています。多くの家族があらゆる方法でこのお祭りを祝うために集まります。

私がフィリピンにいた頃イースターエッグハントをよくしました。カラフルなプラスティックの卵が庭のどこかに慎重に隠されおり、子どもたちはできるだけ多くの卵を見つけようとします。卵を探しながら庭を散策するのはまるで宝探しのようでわくわくしました。ゲームの最後には卵の数を数え、最も多くの卵を見つけた子どもには賞金があるのです。

イースターエッグハントをした後は、本物の鶏の卵に絵を描くという楽しくてクリエイティブな遊びをします。絵を描いて乾かしたら、一番上手な作品に投票します。

遊びが終わると、家族はダイニングテーブルの周りに集まり、祝祭の料理が運ばれてくるのを待ちます。イースター前の一週間はファスティングという期間があります。その期間には食事制限をして、魚以外の肉やあらゆる食べ物を我慢しなければいけません。だからファスティングを終えたイースターのときには、たくさんの美味しい料理を家族で囲み盛大にお祝いをするのです。
