Kia Ora! The end of Spring is almost here, and I wanted to share a bit about the Sports Festival at Kawakita Junior High School, which took place in mid-May.
In Japan, the event is called the “Sports Festival,” and it’ s not just about sports. There are also many fun activities,which is why it’s called a festival! Back in New Zealand, we call it “Sports Day.” It’ s quite similar to Japan’s, with team competitions, but we had four teams in my high school, and the event focused mainly on sports rather than fun activities.
Some of the sports we competed in included javelin, discus, shot put, and a special event called “boots throwing” ,which I didn’ t see in Japan’s Sports Day. While Japan has a variety of fun activities, New Zealand’s Sports Day included these more traditional events, but with a few unique ones that made it stand out. Each student was required to participate in at least three events. On the day, we wore our own clothes, but each team had its own color. Mine was yellow! A fun addition to the day was the teachers’ race, where the teachers ran 100 meters. It was hilarious and a great moment of fun for everyone.
It was a wonderful experience to participate in Japan’ s sports day and to experience the cultural difference, especially with all the exciting activities and the spirit of the festival.

キォーラ!春も終わりに近づいてきましたね。今回は、5月中旬に行われた川北中学校のスポーツフェスティバルについて少しシェアしたいと思います。
日本では、このイベントは「スポーツフェスティバル」と呼ばれていて、単なるスポーツだけでなく、楽しいアクティビティもたくさんあるので「フェスティバル」と呼ばれています!ニュージーランドでは「スポーツデー」と呼んでいます。日本のものとかなり似ていて、チーム戦もありますが、私の高校では4つのチームに分かれて、イベントは主にスポーツに焦点を当て、楽しいアクティビティはあまりありませんでした。
私たちが競技したスポーツには日本とほとんど似ているけど、槍投げ、円盤投げ、砲丸投げがあり、特に「ブーツ投げ」という特別なアクティビティがありました。これは日本のスポーツフェスティバルでは見かけませんでした。日本にはいろいろな楽しいアクティビティがありますが、ニュージーランドのスポーツデーは、こうした伝統的な競技が中心でしたが、いくつかユニークな競技もあって、それが印象に残っています。全ての生徒は少なくとも3つの競技に参加する必要がありました。当日は、自分たちの服を着て、各チームに色がありました。私のチームは黄色でした!
その日の楽しいハイライトの一つは、先生たちのレースで、先生たちが100メートルを走りました。とても面白く、みんなで楽しむことができました。
日本のスポーツ祭に参加できて、文化の違いを体験するのは素晴らしい経験でした。特に、たくさんの楽しいアクティビティと祭りの精神が感じられました。
