■レイでお祝いするハワイの卒業式
Aloha everyone! I’m so happy it is finally summer. After living the last 15 years in Hawaii, my fi rst winter was very challenging! In March I had the opportunity to attend my first graduation ceremony in Japan. The ceremony was so special and completely different from graduations in Hawaii. At home, we make large signs and bring horns to make lots of noise when the graduate’s name is announced. It is a competition to see who can be loudest. We also celebrate by presenting graduates with many lei.Usually they are made from real flowers, but they can also be made of money or candy on a string.When my brother graduated university I made him a pohaku out of dollar bills, which is a special kind of lei that you wear around your head. At the end of the ceremony, you often cannot see the graduate’s face because there are so many lei.
I made lei for the graduating sixth graders at Okaharu Elementary School. If you would like to learn how to make them, please let me know.Thy are very simple to make with yarn. I loved watching the ceremony at Okaharu. I know how hard all the students worked. Good luck to everyone in the new school year, and welcome to all the new students!

みなさん、アロハ!やっと夏がやってきて嬉しいです。ハワイに15年暮らしていたので久しぶりの冬はとても大変でした。3月に私は日本で初めて卒業式に参加する機会がありました。卒業式の様子はとても特別な感じでハワイの卒業式とは全く違っていました。ハワイでは、大きな看板のようなものを作ったり、卒業生の名前が呼ばれると角笛を大きく吹きます。それはまるで誰が一番大きな音を出せるかを競うかのようです。それから、卒業生にたくさんのレイ(花輪)をプレゼントします。通常、レイは生花で作りますが、お金やキャンディーを紐で結んで作ることもできます。
私は弟が大学を卒業した時、頭にかぶるタイプのレイ(pohaku/ハワイ語…頭にかぶるレイ)をドル紙幣で作りました。卒業式の最後のほうには、レイで卒業生たちの顔が見えないほどになります。私は、岡原小学校の卒業生のためにレイを作りました。どうやって作るのか知りたい方は私に聞いてくださいね。毛糸でとても簡単に作れます。岡原小の卒業式を見守れてうれしかったです。生徒のみんなはよく頑張りました。みなさんの新学期に幸運を祈っています。そして新しい生徒の皆さん、ようこそ!
