December is here! This means it is time for Christmas and New Years. In America,Christmas and New Years are very important holidays. Both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are national holidays.
On Christmas Eve, family will gather for a meal together. In many families, these dinners are large events, where extended family and friends are also invited. In my family, our Christmas dinner has over 20 people. We would eat prime rib, ham, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls, and so on. After Christmas Eve dinner,many families attend a Christmas Eve church service. Early on Christmas Day, families will gather around the Christmas tree to open Christmas presents.
New Year’s Eve is also a large event for many people. People will host or attend large parties. Some restaurants and bars will also host New Year’s Eve parties. People will drink and talk about their plans and goals for the new year. When midnight approaches,everyone will count down to the New Year together. When midnight hits, people will yell “Happy New Year” and celebrate with a drink.
This will be my second Christmas and New Year’s in Japan. Though there are things that I miss about celebrating in America, I enjoy celebrating Christmas and New Year’s here in Japan.

12月が来ました!クリスマスとニューイヤーの時期ですね。アメリカではクリスマスとニューイヤーはとても重要な祝日です。
クリスマスも元旦も祝日です。クリスマスイブには家族が集まって食事をします。多くの家庭で、ディナーは大規模なイベントであり、親戚や友人も招待されます。我が家のクリスマスディナーは20人以上です。プライムリブ、ハム、マッシュポテト、マカロニ・アンド・チーズ、ロールパンなどを食べます。クリスマスイブのディナーの後、多くの家族がクリスマスイブの教会礼拝に出席します。クリスマスの早朝、家族でクリスマスツリーの周りに集まり、クリスマスプレゼントを開きます。
大晦日は多くの人にとっても大きなイベントです。人々は大きなパーティーを主催または出席します。レストランや飲み屋では大晦日のパーティーも開催されます。お酒を飲んで新年の計画や目標について話します。真夜中が近づくと、みんな一緒に新年までカウントダウンします。真夜中になると、人々は「明けましておめでとう!」と叫び、飲み物で乾杯します。
日本では今年で2回目のクリスマスとニューイヤーになります。アメリカでのお祝いが懐かしくなることもありますが、日本でクリスマスやニューイヤーを祝うことも楽しいです。
