■The 14th Chizu Haikara Festival
This year, I got invited as one of the contestants in the annual Chizu Haikara Festival. The kimono and haori I wore this year were ones that I had to remake from recycle kimonos that were too small for me.
During the competition, I wanted my speech to uplift everyone’s spirits in Chizu. I hope that even though my Japanese was not so good I was able to communicate my spirit and intent.
After the presentation, I walked around the festival ground seating yakitori and the gyoza from the gas station. I met many of my students and I am happy to see them running around and having fun at the festival, many of them tried speaking English with me and I am proud that they try to speak English on their own.
Many of my friends from Tottori city and Iwami town came to enjoy the festival. The Haikara Festival reminded me once again of Chizu’s strong community spirit, a town where tradition, friendship, and joy all come together.

■第14回ちづ宿ハイカラ市
今年、私は毎年恒例のちづ宿ハイカラ市に出場しました。今年着た着物と羽織は、私には小さすぎたので、リサイクル着物を自分でリメイクしました。
コンテストでは、智頭の皆さんの気持ちを少しでも明るくしたいと思ってスピーチをしました。日本語があまり上手ではありませんでしたが、私の気持ちと意図が伝わっていればよいと思います。
コンテストのパフォーマンスの後、会場内を歩き回って、出店で買った焼き鳥や餃子を食べました。小学校や中学校のたくさんの子供たちにも会いました。子供たちが祭りで走り回って楽しんでいる姿を見て嬉しく思いました。たくさんの生徒が私と英語で話そうとしてくれました。子供たちが自分から英語で話そうとしていることを誇りに思いました。
鳥取市や岩美町からも多くの友達が祭りを楽しみに智頭町に来てくれました。ハイカラ市は、伝統、友情、そして喜びが一つになった智頭町の「強いつながり」を改めて私に感じさせてくれました。
