Valentine’s Day is represented by hearts, chocolate, and the color red. While it’s recognized globally, people celebrate it differently.
In the U.S., it’s a day to show love and appreciation.
Elementary students make Valentine cards to give to classmates during class parties. Couples often plan special dates, with men typically expected to give gifts like jewelry, flowers, or chocolate to women.
Beyond the U.S., Valentine’s Day traditions vary greatly in Asia.
In Japan, the tradition is reversed̶girls give chocolate to men on Valentine’s Day. Different types of chocolate are given based on the relationship, from romantic interests to friends or coworkers. One month later, on White Day (March 14), men return the favor with gifts.
In China, similar to the U.S., Valentine’s Day is for couples, while single people tend to ignore it.
To celebrate being single, November 11 (Singles’ Day) has become a popular holiday for self-care and indulgence.
