■Happy New Year(あけましておめでとう)

Dear Showa Village residents, Happy New Year to all of you! New Year’s in Colombia is a very big event, and Colombians love to add a special touch to the celebration.
I’d like to share some of our traditions with you.
First, the color of your outfit matters̶ especially your underwear. Yellow represents prosperity and is the most popular choice. White stands for peace, red for love, green for good health, and gold for wealth and success.
Another tradition is quite a funny one： we make a life-size doll filled with hay and dressed in old clothes, and display it on the street throughout December. Neighbors greet it, take photos with it, and it becomes the “buddy” of the neighborhood. Then, at midnight on December 31st, we burn it in the street to symbolize letting go of the bad from the past year and welcoming new beginnings.
We also have other customs, like eating 12 grapes at the final countdown̶ one wish per grape. Some people carry lentils in their pockets for good fortune, or walk around the neighborhood with a suitcase at midnight to attract travel in the coming year. 私達の伝統をいくつかご紹介したいと思います。
まず一つは、服装の色、特に下着の色が重要です。黄色は繁栄を表し、最も人気のある色です。白は平和、赤は愛、緑は健康、金は富と成功を表します。
もう一つは、とても面白いものです。干し草を詰めて古着を着せた等身大の人形を作り、12月中ずっと通りに飾ります。近所の人たちが挨拶したり、一緒に写真を撮ったりして、近所の「仲間」になります。そして、12月31日の真夜中に、過去1年間の悪い出来事を捨て去り、新たな始まりを迎える象徴として、その人形を路上で燃やします。
