Dear Showa Village Residents, I usually write about Canada here, but since I was born in Colombia, there’s a special part of my life that began there̶and I’d love to share a bit of it with you.My mom was born in a small village in Colombia called Sahagún. It’s a charming and peaceful place where life moves slowly, neighbors know each other by name, and there’s a deep sense of community. One of the main livelihoods there is farming̶especially raising animals̶so it’s quite common to see cows, chickens, and horses wandering around the town.
I still remember how the roosters would wake me up each morning, and how cows could be seen calmly grazing just about everywhere. People often cook outdoors in their backyards, gathering around fire pits to make hearty traditional soups, or grilling fresh vegetables and meats straight from the farm.The weather in Sahagún is warm all year round, with a refreshing breeze that comes during the cooler “winter” months. I used to spend my summer and Christmas holidays there, and every visit felt like a return to something pure and joyful. Sahagún is about a four-hour drive from the city where I was born. As a little girl, I found the road trip fascinating̶watching the landscape transform from the busy city into vast open plains, dotted with cows, horses, and endless green fields. It felt like crossing into another world. Showa reminds me sometime of Sahagun and brings back that peaceful feeling of being at home! Until next time!

昭和村の皆さん、私は普段はカナダについて書いていますが、コロンビアで生まれたので、そこで始まった私の人生の特別な部分があります。その一部について皆さんとシェアしたいと思います。私の母はコロンビアのサアグンという小さな村で生まれました。そこは、のんびりとしたペースで生活が流れ、隣人同士が名前で呼び合い、深いコミュニティの絆が感じられる魅力的で平和な場所です。その地域での主な生計手段のひとつは農業̶特に家畜の飼育̶なので、牛や鶏、馬が町中を歩き回っているのをよく見かけます。
私は今でも、毎朝鶏が私を起こしてくれたことを覚えています。そして、牛が至る所で静かに草を食べる姿が見られたことも。人々はよく庭で野外料理を楽しみ、焚き火の周りに集まって伝統的な濃厚なスープを作ったり、農場から直送された新鮮な野菜や肉を焼いたりします。
サアグンの気候は一年を通して温暖で、涼しい「冬」の月には爽やかな風が吹きます。私はかつてそこで夏休みとクリスマス休暇を過ごしましたが、訪れるたびに純粋で楽しい場所に戻ったような気持ちになりました。サアグンは私が生まれた街から車で約4時間です。幼い頃、私は車での旅行に魅力を感じていました。賑やかな街の景色が、牛や馬が点在しどこまでも続く緑の田園地帯が広がる広大な平原に変化するのを眺め心を奪われました。まるで別の世界へ踏み込むような感覚でした。
昭和村は、サアグンを思い出させ、まるで故郷にいるような穏やかな気持ちにさせてくれます。
