くらし 【コナーのコーナー No.19】4月は素晴らしい季節

みなさん、こんにちは。ALTのコナーです。

I hope you had a good March. It has been quite an interesting month for me. I met a traveling band of monks from Kanagawa prefecture during a dinner at Magokoro, I played the piano and danced with friends at a talent show in Aomori City, and I took a big trip to Hyogo prefecture to visit Himeji City for the first time. Well… to be honest, the talent show and trip to Himeji have not happened yet by the time I’m writing this article； here’s to hoping that they go well!
3月は皆さんにとって良い月だったでしょうか。私にとってはとても興味深い月でした。「まごころ」で神奈川県から来たお坊さんのグループと会ったり、青森市のタレントショーで友達とピアノを弾いて踊ったり、兵庫県まで大旅行をして姫路市を初めて訪れたりしました。ええと…正直に言うと、この記事を書いている時点ではまだタレントショーも姫路への旅行も終わっていません。うまくいくことを祈っています!

April is a beautiful time to be living in Japan. There seems to be a general feeling of refreshed life and renewed spirits when the sky is sunny and the sakura are blooming. However, I think it’s interesting that so many things in Japan seem to begin anew in April. Students enter school and move up to the next grade, companies begin a new financial year, and many workers change positions or move locations. When I see this, it almost feels like April 1st is the start of a new year, perhaps a “New Year’s Day”?
4月は日本に住むのに素晴らしい季節です。空が晴れ、桜が咲くと、全体的に生活がリフレッシュされ、気持ちが新たになるようです。しかし、日本では4月に多くのことが新しく始まるように見えるのは興味深いです。学生は学校に入学して次の学年に進み、企業は新しい会計年度を開始し、多くの勤務者は職務を変更したり、場所を移動したりします。これを見ると、4月1日が新しい年の始まり、おそらく「元旦」のように感じられます。

I understand the reason why Springtime would be associated with “new beginnings”. We can see new life in the world around us； new flowers grow, trees “turn a new leaf” and animals return from hibernation.However, it does make me wonder why we celebrate the New Year during the winter in America. I suppose it is important to have many things to celebrate during the Winter； it’s a very difficult time for many people,so it’s good to have opportunities to raise spirits. When I see the fireworks welcome a new year after a cold New Year’s Eve, it always manages to warm my heart.
春が「新たな始まり」と結び付けられる理由が私には分かります。私たちの周りの世界には新しい生命が生まれ、新しい花が咲き、木々は「新葉」になり、動物は冬眠から戻ってきます。しかし、アメリカではなぜ冬に新年を祝うのか不思議に思います。冬の間にお祝いすることがたくさんあるのは大切なことだと思います。冬は多くの人にとって非常に困難な時期なので、気分を高める機会があるのは良いことです。寒い大晦日の後に新年を迎える花火を見ると、いつも心が温まります。

With that said, how do you plan on spending your April? Now that the snow has melted, I plan on riding my bicycle again. My goal is to bike from Imabetsu to Tappi Zaki and back again in one day! I should really get back to training… thank you for reading.
