■Happy New Year!
New Year’s Day is an important celebration day in many countries around the world. In both Japan and the Philippines, families celebrate together, but the traditions are a little different. Let’s take a look!
In Japan, I noticed that New Year is calm and peaceful. I heard that families clean their homes to welcome good fortune. I saw people visit a shrine on January 1st and learned that it is called “hatsumōde,” a prayer for good health, success, happiness, and more in the coming year. I tried it last year with my friends and I plan to do it in 2026, too.
In the Philippines, New Year is loud, colorful,and full of energy. Families and neighbors celebrate with big parties. At midnight, people make noise with fireworks, horns, and music to drive away bad luck. Many families prepare 12 round fruits for good fortune. Homes open their windows and doors to welcome luck. There is plenty of food, singing, and dancing. Everyone greets each other with “Manigong Bagong Taon!” (Tagalog) or “Malipayong Bag-ong Tuig!” (Bisaya) which means Happy New Year!
No matter how people celebrate, New Year is a chance to begin again. It is a time to be thankful, to make plans for the future, and to share joy with others. I hope that year 2026 brings health, happiness, and peace to everyone.

元旦は世界中の多くの国々で大切な祝日です。
日本とフィリピン、どちらも家族で祝いますが、習わしは少々異なります。
それでは見ていきましょう!
日本では、新年は穏やかで平和だと気付きました。
家族は幸運を招くために家を掃除すると聞きました。
人々が元旦に神社を参拝するのを見、これが「初詣」と呼ばれるもので、新年の健康や成功、幸福などを祈願するものであることを知りました。
昨年は友人と一緒に初詣を体験しましたが、2026年もそうするつもりです。
フィリピンでは、新年は騒がしく、カラフルで活気に溢れています。
家族や近所の人々が盛大なパーティーで祝います。
深夜には、花火やクラクション、それに音楽の騒音で厄払いをします。
多くの家庭では幸運を招く、12種類の丸い果物を用意します。家々は窓や扉を開けて幸運を迎え入れます。
ご馳走や歌、踊りが溢れ、「明けましておめでとうございます!」の意味の「マニゴン・バゴン・タオン!」(タガログ語)や「マリパヨン・バゴン・トゥイグ!」(ビサヤ語)という言葉で皆が挨拶を交わします。
新年の祝い方は様々ですが、新年は新たに始める機会です。
新年は、感謝の気持ちを表したり、将来の計画を立てたり、共に喜びを分かちあったりする時です。
2026年は、皆様が健康で、幸福で、そして平和でありますように願っています。
