[Setsubun]
Getting to be involved in a lot of Japanese cultural events has been really fun for me, and as we move into the new year I find myself looking forward to Setsubun. I had never known the concept of Sestubun until I moved to Matsuno nearly 3 years ago.
Setsubun is (to my understanding) a holiday about banishing the previous year’s bad luck and evil spirits as we transition into the coming spring. Although I can’t think of anything quite like mamemaki celebrated today where I’m from (with my cultural background), interestingly enough the aspect of ‘’purification’’ is closer than most people in the west realize to us fundamentally.
The month of February’s name comes from the latin word Februa, which translates to ‘’purification.’’ There once was an ancient Roman festival of the same name, typically celebrated on February 15th. The festival rituals revolved around cleansing evil spirits and preparing for the new year in a similar theme. The only common ritual I’m aware most people in America do is ‘’Spring cleaning’’ anymore, haha!
I find it really interesting how across the world familiar concepts show up cross-culturally, even well before it was possible to learn from each other’s cultures as easily as today.

日本の文化行事にたくさん参加できて本当に楽しかったです。新年を迎えるにあたり、節分が待ち遠しくなりました。3年ほど前に松野に引っ越してくるまで、節分という概念を知りませんでした。
節分は(私の理解では)春を迎えるにあたり、前年の厄や邪気を祓う行事です。私の出身地(私の文化的背景)では、今日のような豆まきのようなものは思い浮かびませんが、興味深いことに、西洋の人々が思っているよりも、この「清め」という側面は私たちにとって根本的に身近なものなのです。
2月という月名はラテン語の「Februa」に由来し、「浄化」を意味します。かつて古代ローマにも同名の祭りがあり、通常は2月15日に祝われていました。祭りの儀式は、悪霊を祓い、新年を迎える準備をするというテーマで行われました。私が知る限り、アメリカ人のほとんどが行っている一般的な儀式といえば「春の大掃除」くらいです(笑)。
今日のようにお互いの文化を簡単に学ぶことができるようになるずっと前から、世界中で馴染みのある概念が異文化間でどのように現れているかは、本当に興味深いと思います。
