Hello, my name is Shayla. During my college years in America, I served as the caretaker of “Heisei-ji,” which in English means “Place of Peace.”
“Heisei-ji” is the first Japanese temple to be dismantled and rebuilt in the United States. It was built in Nagoya in 1984. It was a family temple, donated by the Tsuzuki family in 2004 and disassembled into over 2,400 pieces and shipped up the Panama Canal where it arrived in Charleston, South Carolina. The dismantled temple sat in the Tsuzuki family’s warehouse for almost four years until the money was raised for the temple’s reconstruction. In 2008, it was transported via the Panama Canal to the Furman University campus, where it was rebuilt. The Tsuzuki family moved to South Carolina in the early 2000s, and opened a successful textile business. They donated the temple to help expand the university’s East-Asian department, though it cannot technically be called a temple anymore. The butsudan, once encased at the center of the temple, has been removed and is in thefamily’s possession. In its place, there is a poem meant to focus the mind. Every weekend, I would get up early to clean the temple, sweep the stairs, and prepare it for opening. Students from various Japanese language classes would visit the temple, and I would explain its history, decoration, architectural style, and more.
I became the caretaker around the time I began learning Japanese, which I believe sparked my interest in both the Japanese language and history. I believe the traditional architecture is beautiful and intricately crafted. I hope to visit more places like this in Japan and learn more about its history.
