■Beyond Halloween
When people think of October, Halloween is usually the first thing that comes to mind. In the Philippines, more children now enjoy dressing up, trick-or-treating, and attending costume parties. Malls, schools, and villages often join in with fun and spooky decorations. But Halloween is only one part of the season.
October falls within the long “ber months,”which means Christmas is already in the air.You can hear holiday music in stores and see Christmas lights starting to appear in homes and streets. Many families begin planning gatherings and preparing for the celebrations ahead.
This month is also the time when people get ready for Undas, or All Saints’ Day and All Souls’Day. Even though it is held in early November, preparations begin weeks in advance. Families clean graves, buy candles and flowers, and reflect on loved ones who have passed away.
In Japan, October is marked by autumn leaves, cooler weather, and traditional festivals. The season feels different, but the sense of meaning is the same.
While Halloween brings fun and excitement,October in the Philippines carries a deeper mix of tradit ion,remembrance,and anticipation for the holidays to come. It is a time of joy, reflection, and togetherness.
■ハロウィンのその先へ
10月といえば、多くの人がまずハロウィンを思い浮かべるでしょう。
フィリピンでは、今日、より多くの子供たちが仮装を楽しんだり、お菓子をもらい歩いたり、仮装パーティーに参加したりする様子は珍しくありません。ショッピングモールや学校、それに村々も、楽しく、不気味なハロウィンの装飾で賑わいます。
しかし、ハロウィンはこの季節のほんの一部に過ぎません。
10月はいわゆる長く続く「_berの付く月」にあり、この時期になると、クリスマスの雰囲気が漂い始めます。街の店ではクリスマス音楽が流れ、家々や通りにクリスマスのイルミネーションが飾られ始めます。多くの家庭が、この先のクリスマスの集まりや祝事の準備を始めます。
また、10月は「ウンダス」(聖人・殉教者追悼日と亡霊追悼日)の準備期間でもあります。ウンダスは11月初旬に行われますが、準備は数週間前から始まります。家族は墓地を清掃し、ろうそくや花を買い、亡くなった大切な人たちを偲びます。
日本でも10月は、紅葉や涼しくなる気候、そして秋の行事などで特徴づけられる季節です。フィリピンとは少し違った風情ですが、その意味するところは同じです。
ハロウィンが楽しさと興奮をもたらす一方で、フィリピンの10月は、伝統、追憶、そしてもうすぐやってくる休暇への期待といった、より深い要素が織り交ざった季節です。喜びと追悼、そして家族や仲間との団欒の時なのです。
