くらし ALT BTS(Beyond the story)

このコーナーでは、松野町のALT(外国語指導助手)の母国の文化や、松野町での日常などを紹介しています。今回はケイト先生が「ケイトの2年目、もっともっと成長したい」についてお話しします。

[Kate’s 2nd Year： Doing More and Being More]
It’s been two years since I arrived in this beautiful town. During my first year, I was just thankful to be assigned in the countryside and not in the big cities of Japan. Now after two years, I am grateful specifically because I was lucky enough to be here [Matsuno]. It feels the same, but different.
At the junior high school, my first batch of first grade students are now in their third year preparing for high school. I can still remember how we were just practicing the past tense of verbs before, but now they can understand and translate English paragraphs to Japanese. The students are also very active in participating in the monthly English board challenges. Some of them also engages in conversations with me even after English classes. It makes me so happy. In the nursery school, we have introduced more English songs and basic lessons. In our weekly English conversation classes with adults, I’m trying to make learning more fun, too. Aside from school work, I have been more active with playing the Japanese drums, too. I may still not be the best at it but it is always a pleasure to perform with Matsuno Kijo Daiko. In some performances, I have tried being the MC, speaking in English and a little Japanese. I hope more younger individuals would join the group.
Because of these reasons, my two years in Matsuno are very special to me. I wish I can still stay here for a few years. My motivation now is to see my students improve, to further deepen the relationships I have built, and to grow as a person. I want to experience more and grow even more.

この美しい町に着任して2年が経ちました。最初の1年間は、日本の大都市ではなく地方に配属されたことに感謝するばかりでした。2年経った今、特に『松野町』にいられる幸運に感謝するようになりました。以前と変わらない気持ちですが、少し違います。
中学校では、私が担当した最初の1年生たちが3年生になり、高校進学に向けて準備を進めています。当初は動詞の過去形を練習するだけだったのに、今では英語の文章を理解し、日本語に翻訳できるようになりました。生徒たちは毎月の英語のボードゲームにもとても積極的に参加してくれています。生徒の中には、英語の授業の後にも私と会話をしてくれる子もいて、とても嬉しいです。保育園では、去年よりも多く英語の歌や基礎レッスンを取り入れました。大人向けの毎週の英会話クラスでも、もっと楽しく学べるように努めています。とても楽しいです。プライベートでは、鬼城太鼓クラブにも入り、和太鼓の演奏にも引き続き積極的に取り組んでいます。まだ上手とは言えませんが、松野鬼城太鼓で演奏するのはいつも楽しいです。いくつかの公演では司会を任せてもらえたので、英語と少しの日本語で話してみました。もっと若い世代の皆さんにも参加してもらえたら嬉しいなと思っています。
松野で過ごした2年間は私にとって特別なものでした。もっと長くここにいられたらいいのにと思っています。生徒たちの成長を見ること、築いてきた人間関係をさらに深めること、そして人間として成長することが、今の私のモチベーションです。もっと多くのことを経験して、もっと成長したいなと思っています。
